CALDWELL SOFTBALL TAKES 1 OF 2 AT NO. 19 C.W. POST
4-20-06
CC 3, CWP 1
CWP 5, CC 0
BROOKVILLE,
N.Y. - The 13th-ranked Caldwell College softball team earned a split of a
non-conference doubleheader at No. 19 C.W. Post Thursday afternoon at C.W.
Post's softball complex. The Cougars, who are also ranked third in the
latest Northeast Region rankings, are now 25-13, while the Pioneers, the
region's top-ranked squad, are 29-10.
C.W. Post struck first in the bottom of the third in game one, scoring on
Kelsey Cooley's RBI single. The Pioneers loaded the bases with two out in
that inning, but Caldwell pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/
Archbishop Spaulding), right, fanned the next batter to end the threat and
the inning. The Cougars answered in the top of the fourth with three runs on
five hits. Senior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville), sophomore
Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and junior Danielle
Payne (Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) each had run-scoring singles, and
junior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had a double in
the inning.
Saunders made the lead stand, allowing four hits and no runs over the last
four innings to improve to 10-6. For the game, she gave up eight hits and
one run while striking out eight. Samantha Yodowitz (8-5) took the loss for
C.W. Post.
The Pioneers earned the split with a 5-0 win in game two, thanks in large
part to pitcher Jackie Sasko, who tossed a two-hit shutout to improve to 9-1
on the season. Three runs in the third on an RBI single by Cooley and a
two-run homer by Jill Fisher gave Sasko all the offense she would need.
Kelsey Walker also hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to
close out the scoring. Junior Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden
Catholic) allowed five hits and three runs in 3 2/3 innings to drop to 10-5.
Payne, who started at third base in both games, was 3 for 6 with an RBI on
the day.
The Cougars are scheduled to play a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
doubleheader at Felician College on Saturday, Apr. 22. The first pitch is
slated for 2:00 p.m.
