SOFTBALL EARNS NON-CONFERENCE SWEEP OF DOWLING

4-13-06
CC 3, DC 2 (8 inn.)
CC 8, DC 0
CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.), right, hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the first game, as the Caldwell College softball team took two from Dowling College in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The 24th-ranked Cougars, who won 3-2 and 8-0, are now 23-11 overall, while the Golden Lions fall to 20-20-1.

D'Amico scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning, when she led off with a double, then later came home on a sacrifice fly from junior Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic). The Cougars went up 2-0 on an RBI single by sophomore Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) in the fifth inning. But Dowling came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth on Kacie Pinto's two-run double. After a scoreless seventh inning, the Golden Lions put runners on first and second with no one out in the top of the eighth. Freshman Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) relieved starter Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) and retired the next three batters to kill the rally.

In the Cougars' half of the eighth, sophomore Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led off with a walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville). D'Amico hit the ball sharply to the left side of the infield, where shortstop Lindsay Heinz deflected the ball into left field, allowing Bodrog to score the game-winning run. D'Amico finished 4 for 4 with an RBI and a run to pace Caldwell. Saunders went seven innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking five. Goforth (2-0) earned the win, while Stephanie Plochochi (7-10) took the loss.

In game two, Caldwell scored four runs in the second and four more in the fifth to end the game in five innings. Flasphaler and Bodrog each had RBI singles in the second, with Jackson driving in a run with a double and sophomore Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) plating Flasphaler with a sacrifice fly. In the fifth, senior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) and Flasphaler each had run-scoring singles to make the score 6-0. Then with the bases loaded, Bodrog, left, hit a single to centerfield that brought home junior Danielle Payne (Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) and Coker to end the game.

Dahl (9-5) pitched all five innings for Caldwell, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking two to earn the shutout. She also went 2 for 2 with two runs at the plate. Bodrog was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI, while Coker and Flasphaler each went 2 for 3 for Caldwell. Jacqueline Lucido (7-9) went the distance for the Golden Lions.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 18 with a doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom College, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
