KISSIMMEE,
Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team finished play at the Rebel Spring
Games with losses to No. 2 Florida Southern and Florida Tech on Wednesday at
the Osceola County Softball Complex. The Cougars return home with a record
of 4-6 on the season.
The day's first game was a rematch of a 2004 game at the Women's College
World Series, won by Florida Southern 1-0. Senior pitcher Jessica
Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) kept the Moccasins at
bay for four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters in
that span. But in the fifth, Angela Williams hit a two-run triple, then
scored on a single by Jesse Shepherd to give Florida Southern a 3-0 lead.
Then in the seventh, Jackie Leppla's bases loaded double put the Moccasins
(28-1) ahead 6-0. Pitcher Stacey Bronson held the Cougars to just three
hits, including the fifth double of the season for senior Katie Jackson
(Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville), pictured.
The Cougars struggled early against Florida Tech (21-6), giving up seven
runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Panthers also got a fifth-inning
home run from Dana Buccelli to make the final score 8-0. Caldwell's
offensive struggles continued, managing just Jackson's single in the fourth
off pitcher Amber West, who struck out nine Cougar batters.
The Cougars play their first home game of the 2006 season on Saturday, Mar.
25, when they host Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Nyack College
in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell
Field.
