Del. - After losing a heartbreaking 1-0 decision in the first game, the
Caldwell College softball team won game two, 5-3 to earn a split of a
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom College
Tuesday afternoon. The results give the Cougars an overall record of 24-12,
including a 13-3 conference mark, while the Lightning are now 13-17, 10-6
CACC.
In the first game, Goldey-Beacom scored the only run of the game in the
bottom of the eighth inning. The Lightning loaded the bases with a walk, an
error and a single. After the Cougars recorded a force out at home for the
second out of the inning, Jill Murphey scored from third on a wild pitch to
end the game. Brandy Ash and Jackie Torres combined for the shutout,
allowing a total of three hits. Although Ash walked six during 5 2/3 innings
of work, the Cougars were unable to capitalize, stranding nine base runners.
Senior Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) went
the distance and took the loss, giving up seven hits and an unearned
run while striking out eight.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard early in the second game. Sophomore
Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), left, led off the game with a
double, then scored on a single by senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville,
NJ/Pennsville). Junior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads)
plated Jackson with a two-out RBI single to put the Cougars ahead 2-0.
Goldey-Beacom answered in the bottom of the second, scoring one run on a
wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Caldwell quickly extended its lead in the top of the third, which began with
a double by Jackson. After a pair of strikeouts, junior Danielle Payne
(Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) singled, then scored along with Jackson on an
error to make the score 4-1. Bodrog doubled home junior Desiree Wilson
(Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), left, in the top of the sixth to give the
Cougars a 5-1 advantage. The Lightning scored a run in the bottom of the
sixth and another in the seventh, but Caldwell held on for the win and the
split.
Junior pitcher Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) pitched all
seven innings for Caldwell, allowing four hits and three runs, two earned,
to improve to 10-4. Bodrog finished the day with three hits, including
two doubles, while Jackson went 3 for 6 with a double and two runs scored.
The Cougars continue their schedule on Thursday, Apr. 20 with a
non-conference doubleheader at C.W. Post. The first game is scheduled to
start at 3:30 p.m.
