CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College women's softball team took two
from Georgian Court University, 1-0 and 7-3, in a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The
victories clinched the Cougars' third consecutive CACC regular-season title
and the No. 1 seed in next week's CACC Tournament, which will be at Caldwell
Field May 4-6. The Cougars are now 31-15 overall and 17-3 in the CACC, while
the Lions fall to 25-11, 15-7 CACC.
The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore
Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led off with a triple,
then scored on a walk-off single by sophomore Nicole Bodrog (Mt.
Laurel, NJ/Lenape) for a 1-0 victory. The Cougars benefited from a dominant
performance by senior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie,
MD/Archbishop Spaulding), left, who scattered four hits while striking out
12 to earn the shutout. Saunders (13-7), who tossed her second shutout of
the season, has fanned 10 or more batters in seven games this year. Georgian
Court's Samantha Sasko also pitched well, allowing four hits, two to Bodrog,
and six walks in 6 1/3 innings.
In
the second game, Caldwell wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard.
Sophomore Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) led off the bottom of
the first with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice and moved the third
on a passed ball. Senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville)
plated Speno with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to put Caldwell ahead 1-0.
In the second inning, senior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville),
right, hit a two-run double, then scored on an error to make the score 4-0.
The Lions countered with a pair of runs in the top of the third on a double
by Nicole Fortino to cut the lead to 4-2. But the Cougars regained the
four-run lead in the bottom of the third, when senior Kristi Godfrey
(West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) scored on an error and Coker came home on a
passed ball.
The Cougars made it 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth, when Coker scored her
third run of the game on an error. The Lions managed another run in the top
of the sixth as the Cougars went on to win 7-3. Junior pitcher Anna Dahl
(Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) gave up eight hits and three runs in a
complete-game victory to improve to 12-6.
The Cougars close out the regular season on Sunday, Apr. 30, when they host
the University of Sciences at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
