SOFTBALL TAKES TWO AT HOLY FAMILY

4-6-06
CC 3, HFU 2
CC 8, HFU 0
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) went 4 for 7 on the day, including a home run and a double, to lead the 24th-ranked Caldwell College softball team to a pair of wins over Holy Family University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field. The Cougars, who won 3-2 and 8-0, are now 16-8 overall and 7-1 in the CACC, while the Tigers drop to 11-19 on the season, including a 5-5 conference mark.

Caldwell scored a run in the top of the second and two runs in the third to take an early 3-0 lead in the first game. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) brought home senior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) in the second inning for the game's first run. Then a bases-loaded single from junior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) scored two runs to put the Cougars up 3-0 after three innings. Holy Family answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning and another run in the sixth on an RBI double by Lauren Armstrong. But the Tigers were unable to get another run off Caldwell starter Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding), who allowed seven hits while striking out seven in a complete-game effort to improve to 7-3. Jackson and Velardi, left, each had a pair of hits to pace the Cougars at the plate.

In the second game, Caldwell again took control in the early innings, as Speno and sophomore Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NJ/Horseheads) scored unearned runs in the first and second inning, respectively. Jackson made it 3-0 in the top of the fifth with a solo home run to centerfield, her fourth of the season. The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with two out. But junior pitcher Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) fanned Jamie Goffney to end the inning.

The Cougars put four more runs on the board in the top of the sixth, with senior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.), right, leading off with a home run to left, her first of the season. Senior Kristi Godfrey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon), who pinch-ran for Birmingham, advanced to third on a single by Flasphaler, then scored on a wild pitch. Speno's RBI single made it 6-0, then Jackson hit a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Meghan Johnston (Kirkland, WA/Lake Washington). D'Amico scored an unearned run in the seventh to make the final score 8-0.

Dahl (6-4) went the distance for Caldwell, scattering four hits and walked four while striking out five for her first shutout of the year. Velardi, who went 2 for 2 in the second game, finished the day 4 for 5 with two RBIs.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Apr. 8, when they play at Bloomfield College in a CACC doubleheader. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
