ROCKVILLE
CENTRE, N.Y. - The 13th-ranked Caldwell College softball team and Molloy
College split a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Molloy.
The Lady Lions won the first game 4-3 in eight innings, with the Cougars
winning game two 7-1 to earn the split, their fourth straight this season.
Caldwell is now 27-15, while the Lady Lions are 11-29.
Molloy struck first in game one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the
fourth. The Cougars responded in the top of the fifth. After senior Amy
Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) singled with one out, junior Jackie
Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) hit a two-run home run, her second
homer in as many games. Sophomore Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads),
right, followed with her second home run of the season to tie the game at
3-3.
The game remained deadlocked through seven innings, when it was decided to
use the international tie-breaker to start the eighth inning. With
Flasphaler placed on second base, sophomore Alyssa Speno (Waterloo,
NY/Waterloo) bunted her over to third. But Caldwell was unable to get the
runner home, as the next two batters struck out. Molloy started its half of
the eighth with Melissa McCarthy on second. After Michelle Walsh's sacrifice
bunt was popped up, Nicole Losito ended the game with a single to right
centerfield, scoring McCarthy.
Senior Jessica Saunders went the distance, giving up six hits and two earned
runs to fall to 11-7. Katie Scotko held the Cougars to three hits through
eight innings to earn the victory.
It
was a different story in game two as Caldwell hammered out 14 hits in a 7-1
victory. Senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville), left, hit
her team-leading eighth home run in the third inning, a two-run shot that
scored sophomore Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). In the top of
the sixth, Bodrog singled with the bases loaded, but a pair of Molloy errors
allowed the three baserunners and Bodrog to score, giving the Cougars a 6-0
lead. Junior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) singled home
Jackson later in the inning for a 7-0 advantage. The Lady Lions pushed a run
across in the seventh and loaded the bases with two out. But the next batter
grounded out to Velardi at first, ending the game.
Freshman pitcher Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) worked
all seven innings for the longest outing of her career. Goforth gave up 10
hits but just one run to improve to 3-0 on the season. Jackson was 4 for 4
at the plate in game two, with a home run and a double to pace Caldwell.
The Cougars have three straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
doubleheaders this weekend, starting with a pair at Felician College on
Friday, Apr. 28 at 11:30 a.m. Caldwell hosts Georgian Court University and
the University of Sciences on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both home
doubleheaders start at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
