COUGARS SPLIT AT PACE
4-25-06
CC 3, Pace 1
Pace 6, CC 5 (6 inn.)
BRIARCLIFF,
N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team, ranked 13th nationally, split a
non-conference doubleheader with Pace University Tuesday afternoon at Pace
Field. The Cougars won the first game 3-1 before losing 6-5 in the second
game, which was shortened by darkness. The results give the Cougars a 26-14
record on the season, while Pace is now 14-21-1.
Junior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NJ/Horseheads), left, scored the
first run of the first game with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
In the same inning, sophomore Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo)
singled home senior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) to put the
Cougars ahead 2-0. Pace cut the lead to 2-1 on an RBI double from Michelle
Brigham in the bottom of the sixth. But the Cougars restored the two-run
lead in the top of the seventh. Senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville,
NJ/Pennsville) doubled, then scored on a single by senior Kim Birmingham
(Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook).
Senior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop
Spaulding) turned in another dominating performance, scattering four hits
and allowing one run in seven innings while striking out 11 to improve to
11-6. Kelly Kinyon also went the distance and took the loss for the Setters.
In
game two, Caldwell again took the lead first on an RBI single from sophomore
Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) in the top of the third. The
Setters responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1
lead. Christina Pane and Brigham each hit run-scoring doubles, while Kinyon
had an RBI single in the inning. Then in the top of the fourth, Falkowski
doubled home Birmingham to make the score 3-2. After Coker singled, junior
Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville), right, hit a three-run
home run to put the Cougars on top 5-3.
Again the Setters answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Pace
took advantage of two errors in the inning, including a throwing error that
allowed two runs to score. After scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth,
the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take an apparent
8-6 lead. But after one Pace batter in the bottom of the seventh, the game
was called due to darkness. Since the Setters did not finish their final
at-bat, the score reverts back to the last completed inning, making the
final score 6-5 in favor of Pace.
Junior Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) gave up six hits
and six runs, four earned, to take the loss and drop to 10-6. Velardi
finished the day 3 for 5 with three RBIs, while Falkowski went 3 for 7 with
two doubles and a home run. Julia Hunt earned the win for the Setters.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, Apr. 27, when they play a
non-conference doubleheader at Molloy College, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
