CALDWELL SWEEPS CACC DOUBLEHEADER AT POST

3-28-06
CC 5, Post 0
CC 6, Post 2
WATERBURY, Conn. - Sophomore Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), left, went a combined 5 for 7 at the plate to help the Caldwell College softball team win a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games at Post University Tuesday afternoon at La Moy Field. The Cougars remained undefeated in the conference with a 4-0 record and improved to 9-7 overall, while the Eagles dropped to 7-13 overall and 2-4 CACC.

Caldwell scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning, when sophomore Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) scored on a fly-out by senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville). The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning, when Jackson led off with a home run to left, her second of the season. Bodrog followed with a double, then scored on an error to put Caldwell up 3-0. Junior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly that brought home senior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.). Bodrog picked up her third hit of the game in the top of the seventh and later scored the game's final run.

Senior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) allowed two first-inning hits, then blanked the Eagles the rest of the way for her first complete-game shutout of the season. Saunders (4-2) struck out nine while walking two in seven innings.

In the second game, Post took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first. After senior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) and D'Amico scored unearned runs in the top of the third, the Eagles tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the third. Then in the top of the fourth, sophomore Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) broke the tie with a lead-off homer. Bodrog then singled and later scored on an error, one of three Eagles' miscues in the inning. Senior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) and Jackson also scored unearned runs in the fourth to put Caldwell up 6-2. The game was halted after five innings due to darkness.

Junior Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) went the distance in the circle, giving up five hits and two runs, one earned, in five innings of work to earn the victory. Senior Sara Neely (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), right, went 2 for 2 at the plate for the Cougars.

Next up for Caldwell is a non-conference doubleheader at Queens College on Thursday, Mar. 30, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
