SOFTBALL WINS TWO AT QUEENS BEHIND JACKSON'S HEROICS

3-30-06
CC 5, QC 2 (8 inn.)
CC 4, QC 2 (6 inn. - darkness)
FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville), left, hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh to tie the first game, then hit a home run in the second game as the Caldwell College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Queens College Thursday afternoon. The Cougars eventually won the first game, 5-2 in eight innings, then won 4-2 in Game 2, which was halted after six innings due to darkness. The victories improve Caldwell's overall record to 11-7 on the season, while the Lady Knights are now 7-12.

Queens took an early lead in the first game with a run in the bottom of the first inning off an RBI single from Nicole Mancusi. The Cougars eventually tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, when a sacrifice fly by senior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) scored sophomore Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). But the Lady Knights regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on Katie Karpinski's RBI double.

In the top of the seventh, Flasphaler led off with a double, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo). After Coker popped up, leaving Queens just one out away from victory, Jackson doubled, plating Flasphaler and tying the game at 2-2. The Cougars took the lead for good in the top of the eighth, as Speno hit a two-run single and Coker had an RBI double to make the score 5-2. After giving up a lead-off double in the bottom of the eighth, senior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) struck out the next two batters and induced a pop-up to the catcher, ending the game. Saunders went the distance, allowing six hits and two runs while fanning 10 to improve to 5-2 on the year. Senior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) had three hits to pace the Cougars.

The Cougars never trailed in the second game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by senior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.). After Jackson scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third, Queens put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2. The damage could have been worse, but sophomore Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) got Lucy Oswald to ground out with the bases loaded to end the inning. In the top of the fifth, Jackson hit her third homer of the season to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead.

de la Campa (3-1) allowed four hits and two runs, one earned, in four innings of work to pick up the win. Freshman Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy), right, gave up two hits in two shutout innings to earn her third save of the season. Jackson finished the day going a combined 4 for 7 with three runs and two RBIs. She is batting a team-best .404 on the season.

The Cougars return home for a pair of doubleheaders against two regionally-ranked teams this weekend. Dominican College comes to Caldwell Field on Saturday, Apr. 1 for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up, followed by the University of New Haven on Sunday, Apr. 2. Both doubleheaders start at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
