SAUNDERS EARNS CACC PITCHER OF THE WEEK HONORS

N.J. - For the second time this season, Caldwell College senior Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie,
MD/Archbishop Spaulding) was chosen the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Apr. 30, the conference
announced today. Saunders went 4-1 with an earned run average of 1.04 in six
appearances last week, and helped the Cougars clinch the CACC regular-season
title with a shutout of Georgian Court on Saturday.
Saunders fanned 12 batters and allowed just four hits in a 1-0 victory over
the Lions in the first game of a doubleheader. She also tossed complete
games in wins over
Pace,
Felician and the University of Sciences. In the 4-3 win over the Devils on
Sunday, Saunders pitched all nine innings and allowed seven hits and no
earned runs while striking out 10. For the week, Saunders struck out 53
batters while walking six in 40 1/3 innings.
A first team all-CACC and all-Northeast Region selection in 2005, Saunders
was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on Apr. 3. She has received the
award four times in her career. This season, Saunders has a record of 14-7
with an ERA of 1.50 and 179 strikeouts in 149.0 innings pitched.
Saunders and the Cougars host the CACC Tournament beginning Thursday, May 4
at Caldwell Field. Last season, Saunders was named the tournament's Most
Valuable Player after leading the Cougars to their second consecutive CACC
Tournament championship. Top-seeded Caldwell plays either No. 4
Goldey-Beacom or No. 5 Bloomfield at 2:00 p.m.
