SAUNDERS EARNS CACC PITCHER OF THE WEEK HONORS

5-1-06
CALDWELL, N.J. - For the second time this season, Caldwell College senior Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) was chosen the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Apr. 30, the conference announced today. Saunders went 4-1 with an earned run average of 1.04 in six appearances last week, and helped the Cougars clinch the CACC regular-season title with a shutout of Georgian Court on Saturday.

Saunders fanned 12 batters and allowed just four hits in a 1-0 victory over the Lions in the first game of a doubleheader. She also tossed complete games in wins over Pace, Felician and the University of Sciences. In the 4-3 win over the Devils on Sunday, Saunders pitched all nine innings and allowed seven hits and no earned runs while striking out 10. For the week, Saunders struck out 53 batters while walking six in 40 1/3 innings.

A first team all-CACC and all-Northeast Region selection in 2005, Saunders was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on Apr. 3. She has received the award four times in her career. This season, Saunders has a record of 14-7 with an ERA of 1.50 and 179 strikeouts in 149.0 innings pitched.

Saunders and the Cougars host the CACC Tournament beginning Thursday, May 4 at Caldwell Field. Last season, Saunders was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after leading the Cougars to their second consecutive CACC Tournament championship. Top-seeded Caldwell plays either No. 4 Goldey-Beacom or No. 5 Bloomfield at 2:00 p.m.
