SOFTBALL EVENS RECORD WITH TWO MORE VICTORIES AT REBEL GAMES

3-21-06
CC 7, SNHU 3
CC 9, Eckerd 0
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Caldwell College Softball team completed sweeps of Southern New Hampshire University and Eckerd College with two wins on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games, held at the Osceola County Softball Complex. The Cougars, who defeated both teams on Monday, downed SNHU 7-3, then blanked Eckerd 9-0 to improve to 4-4 on the season.

The Cougars wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against SNHU, as sophomore Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led off with a double, then scored on a double by senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville). Jackson, whose double was her fourth in three games, later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0. Still in the first inning, senior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) singled home junior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). Junior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), pictured, closed out the scoring in the first when she scored on another wild pitch to give Caldwell a 4-0 lead.

The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the second, when a single by senior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) plated Bodrog. Southern New Hampshire scored its first run in the top off the third off of a wild pitch by junior Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic). But Dahl would reclaim that run in dramatic fashion, hitting her first home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 6-1. After SNHU pushed across another run in the fourth, Bodrog scored her third run of the game on Velardi’s sacrifice fly to left field. Bodrog finished 2 for 3 on the day, while Birmingham went 2 for 2 with a walk. Dahl earned the win, allowing five hits and two runs in five innings.

Against Eckerd, Falkowski struck the first blow with an RBI double that scored senior Gina D’Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) in the second inning. D’Amico added to the Cougars’ lead with a single in the third that brought home Jackson. After a scoreless fourth, Falkowski hit another double down the left-field line in the fifth, scoring two more runs. Then in the sixth, Coker’s single plated senior Sara Neely (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), before the Cougars put up four more runs in the top of the seventh. Coker and sophomores Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) each had RBIs, with Coker later scoring on an error.

Senior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) allowed no runs on four hits while striking out seven in six innings to earn the victory. Freshman Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win.

The Cougars finish up their Florida trip on Wednesday, Mar. 22, with games against No. 3 Florida Southern at 4:10 p.m. and Florida Tech at 6:00 p.m.
