CALDWELL TAKES TWO FROM WILMINGTON IN SOFTBALL

N.J. - Senior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.), right,
went 4 for 7 with a homer and four RBIs to lead the Caldwell College
softball team to a sweep of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
doubleheader with Wilmington College Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field.
The Cougars, which won 8-0 in five innings and 5-1, improved to 19-11
overall and 10-2 in the CACC. The Wildcats dropped their fifth and sixth
games in a row to fall to 6-20 on the season, including a 4-8 conference
record.
D'Amico got the Cougars on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning
with an RBI single. With two runners on, senior Kim Birmingham (Pine
Hill, NJ/Overbrook) tripled to right centerfield, scoring D'Amico and senior
Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) for a 3-0 lead. After an
RBI single by sophomore Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) in the
second, Caldwell put three more runs on the board in the bottom of the
third. With one out and the bases loaded, sophomore Carrie Flasphaler
(Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) knocked home two runs with a single. Sophomore
Alyssa Speno followed with a grounder to second that scored junior Jackie
Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) from third to put the Cougars up
7-0. D'Amico put the finishing touches on the victory with a solo home run
in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop
Spaulding) pitched four shutout innings, allowing just two singles while
striking out two to improve to 8-5. Freshman Ceci Goforth (Houston,
TX/St. Agnes Academy) pitched a perfect fifth inning to preserve the
five-inning win.
In
the second game, D'Amico again drove home the Cougars' first run with a
single in the third inning. Junior Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden
Catholic), who doubled in the first game, led off the bottom of the fourth
inning with her second home run of the season. D'Amico made it 3-0 with
another RBI single in the fifth. Amanda Mucaria plated Wilmington's lone run
of the day in the top of the sixth with an RBI single. But the Cougars
answered with two runs in the sixth. Senior Amy Coker (Pennsville,
NJ/Pennsville) brought home Flasphaler, left, with a sacrifice fly, then
Jackson tripled, scoring Bodrog to make it 5-1.
This time is was Dahl's turn to give the Cougars a stellar pitching
performance. Dahl (8-4) gave up just three hits and one unearned run while
fanning six in seven innings pitched.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 12, with another home CACC
doubleheader against Philadelphia University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
at Caldwell Field.
