WALL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team defeated Wilmington College, 7-5 on the first day of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at Harry Rash Field. Junior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as the Cougars improved to 32-15 on the season and advanced to play top-seeded Georgian Court University in the winner’s bracket on Friday. Wilmington dropped to 30-14.

The Cougars got off to a fast start with back-to-back singles by Bodrog and freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) to lead off the bottom of the first. After senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) bunted the runners over, a grounder by senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) plated Bodrog for a 1-0 Caldwell lead. Wilmington’s Kelly Schirmer tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) led off with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Alicia Langone (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick). After a strikeout, Bodrog hit a single up the middle to bring home Frantellizzi to make the score 2-1 Cougars. Then in the sixth, Caldwell took advantage of three Wildcat errors to put five runs on the board. Following a lead-off single by Velardi and a walk by junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo), back-to-back miscues allowed Speno and freshman Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) to score. Another error with the bases loaded allowed all three base runners to come home for a 7-1 lead. Wilmington used three hits to score four runs in the top of the seventh, but senior pitcher Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) recorded the final two outs of the game to wrap up the win.

Junior pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) started the game and allowed seven hits and five runs in 6 1/3 innings to improve to 11-2. Webb earned her second save of the season. Wilmington’s Katie Turner pitched all six innings to take the loss.

The Cougars play host Georgian Court in a winner’s bracket game on Friday, May 4, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
