N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team lost to top-seeded Georgian Court
University, 4-1 in the winner’s bracket game of the Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference Tournament Friday afternoon. With the win, the Lions
(27-21) remain unbeaten in the double-elimination tournament, while the
Cougars (32-16) will play in an elimination game against Wilmington College
on Saturday, May 5 at 11:00 a.m.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third, when the Cougars
loaded the bases on a single by freshman Alicia Langone (Kendall
Park, NJ/South Brunswick), a walk and a fielder’s choice. Senior Jackie
Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) followed with a walk that scored
Langone for the game’s first run. Georgian Court tied the game in the bottom
of the fifth on a squeeze bunt by Heather Walker that plated Vanessa
Piepszak.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions had a runner on second and two out but
were able to load the bases on an infield hit and a walk. Ashley Wierema
then hit a two-run single that made the score 3-1 Lions. After Georgian
Court loaded the bases again, Mallory Kirchner singled home Piepszak for a
4-1 lead. The Cougars put runners on second and third with two out, but were
unable to score in the game’s final inning.
Lions’ pitcher Samantha Sasko held the Cougars to three hits and one run
while striking out nine in the complete-game victory. Senior Nicole Webb
(Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) also went the distance in the circle for
Caldwell, giving up 11 hits and two earned runs to take the loss.
The Cougars continue play at the CACC Softball Tournament on Saturday, May 4
with a game against No. 3 Wilmington College at 11:00 a.m. at Georgian
Court’s campus field.
