CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team is ranked 21st in the National
Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll, released
Wednesday. The Cougars, who were 25th in the NFCA's final national poll last
year, received 48 points in the preseason poll, which is voted on by eight
NCAA Division II head coaches representing the eight regions. The ranking
marks the 22nd time in the last 23 polls that Caldwell has appeared in the
national rankings.
Last season the Cougars advanced to the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament
after capturing their third straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
Tournament title. Caldwell, which finished 37-16 overall and 19-3 in
the CACC in 2006, has dominated the conference the past three years with a
record of 56-6 in CACC play. Seniors Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads),
Danielle Payne (Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.), Jackie Velardi
(Belleville, NJ/Belleville), pictured, and Desiree Wilson (Gloucester
City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) are back to lead the Cougars, as is junior
infielder Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), an all-CACC second
team selection in 2006.
Head coach Dean Johnson begins his 13th season having compiled an
overall record of 335-160 at Caldwell. The 2007 schedule begins on Mar. 16
at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Cougars' first home game is on
Saturday, Mar. 24 against Goldey-Beacom College.
