PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College softball team blanked the University of Sciences, 5-0 in Game 2 to earn a split of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at McNeill Field. After losing the first game 6-5 in eight innings, the Cougars received a two-hit shutout from sophomore pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) to improve to 20-8 on the season, including a 10-4 mark in the conference. The results give the Devils an overall record of 9-17 and a 6-6 CACC record.

The Cougars grabbed an early lead in the first game with four runs in the top of the third. Junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led off the inning with a double, then later scored on a grounder by sophomore Stephanie Brodo (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary's). Senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) singled home a run and also scored along with freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) on a single by senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). But USP battled back, scoring three runs on a bases-loaded double by Carolyn Snavely in the bottom of the fifth before taking the lead on a two-run double from Megan Trimble in the bottom of the sixth.

Down to their last inning, the Cougars tied the game on Brodo's second home run of the season to lead off the seventh. Neither team scored during the remainder of the seventh, forcing extra innings. After Caldwell was retired in order in the top of the eighth, Brittany Brown led off the bottom of the eight with a walk-off home run that gave the Devils the victory.

Senior pitcher Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) went the distance for Caldwell, striking out 10 batters while allowing 10 hits and four earned runs (six total) in seven-plus innings. Rachel Morgan worked eight innings for the win, fanning seven while giving up nine hits and five runs. Snavely was 3 for 3 with three RBIs for the Devils.

In the second game, the Cougars scored the first run when junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first. Falkowski made it 2-0 with her fourth homer of the season to lead off the fifth. Later in the fifth, freshman Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) hit a two-run single to put Caldwell up 4-0. In the sixth, freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) hit a single that plated freshman Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratton) from second for a 5-0 lead.

De la Campa allowed hits in the third and fourth innings before recording 11 consecutive outs to end the game. She struck out one and walked one to improve to 7-1 on the season. Falkowski and Speno completed the day with four hits apiece to lead the Cougars at the plate. Laura Flint gave up 11 hits and five runs in seven innings for the Devils.

The Cougars are scheduled to host Adelphi University on Sunday, Apr. 15 in a non-conference doubleheader. The first game begins at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
