CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College freshman shortstop Danielle Genovese
(Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference Softball Rookie of the Year and was one of five Cougars honored
on the all-CACC teams, which were released today. Genovese and sophomore
pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) were
selected to the all-CACC first team, while senior pitcher Nicole Webb
(Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) and juniors Nicole Bodrog (Mt.
Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) made the
second team.
Genovese started 45 of Caldwell's 46 games at shortstop this season. She
currently leads the team in batting average (.436) hits (65), runs (37),
doubles (13), triples (5) and stolen bases (11) while pacing the conference
in hits. Genovese earned CACC Player of the Week honors for the week ending
Apr. 1 after hitting .514 with eight runs batted in, 10 runs scored, two
home runs, two triples and two doubles in 10 games. Earlier this season, she
drove in the game-winning runs in extra-inning victories over Minnesota
State-Mankato and Bloomfield.
De la Campa makes her first appearance on the all-CACC team after sitting
out most of the 2006 season due to injury. This year de la Campa has a
record of 10-3 with an earned run average of 2.55. She has 54 strikeouts
against 22 walks in 99.0 innings and ranks second in the conference in
opponents' batting average at .240.
Webb earned CACC Pitcher of the Week three times this season, her first at
Caldwell after transferring from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck.
Webb leads the Cougars in wins (13), ERA (2.47) and innings pitched (144
2/3). She also has recorded a team-high 110 strikeouts to rank among the
conference leaders.
Bodrog repeats as a member of the all-CACC second team after earning the
honor as a sophomore in 2006. The Cougars' starter at third base, Bodrog is
batting .319 and ranks second on the team in home runs (six), runs scored
(36) and doubles (10).
Speno also is a first-time all-CACC honoree this season. The left fielder is
batting .363 to rank second on the team and has a career-high 22 RBIs to go
with three doubles. In a 7-1 win over Holy Family University on Apr. 3, she
hit a solo home run, her first of her career, in the eighth inning to help
secure the win.
The Cougars (31-15), coached by Dean Johnson, look to capture their
fourth consecutive CACC Tournament title this week. The tournament begins on
Thursday, May 3, with the championship game played on Saturday, May 5 on the
campus of Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J.
