CALDWELL, N.J. - A one-out double by freshman Danielle Genovese
(Livingston, NJ/Livingston), left, in the bottom of the 10th lifted the Caldwell
College softball team to a 7-6 victory over Bloomfield College Tuesday
afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, ranked 12th in the latest NFCA
Division II Top 25 poll, improve to 19-6 overall and 9-2 in the conference,
while the Deacons drop to 9-12, 3-6 CACC.
Game 2 of the scheduled
doubleheader was postponed due to darkness and will be played on Wednesday,
Apr. 11 at 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
The Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, when Brianne Moore
tripled home Fauna Ryerson. Caldwell answered in the bottom of the fourth
with a two-run single by freshman Alicia Langone (Kendall Park,
NJ/South Brunswick) that brought home freshman Brittni Frantellizzi
(Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and sophomore Kim Aguirre
(Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) for a 2-1 lead. Moore tied the game in the top
of the sixth when she came home on Amanda Byrnes' single. The Cougars had a
chance to score in the bottom of the seventh with runners at first and third
and two out. But a long fly ball to centerfield off the bat of senior
Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) was caught at the fence to
send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Byrnes hit a two-run double and the Deacons scored
another run on a groundout to take a 5-2 advantage. In the bottom of the
eighth, Caldwell was down to its last out with runners at first and second
for sophomore Stephanie Brodo (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary's). Brodo's
grounder was mishandled by the shortstop, scoring junior Alyssa Speno
(Waterloo, NJ/Waterloo) and keeping the inning alive. After the next batter,
junior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), was hit by a pitch,
Genovese doubled down the left field line to score Brodo and Langone and tie
the game at 5-5.
After
the eighth inning, a runner was placed at second base in accordance with the
international tie-breaking rule. Bloomfield's Ryerson singled home Erin
Covell in the top of the ninth for a 6-5 lead. Caldwell responded by plating
freshman Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) with Speno's
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. After sophomore pitcher Ceci
Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) retired the side with a pair of
strikeouts and a groundout in the top of the 10th, Genovese came through
with a double that brought home Langone from second in the bottom of the
10th for a 7-6 victory. It was the Cougars' sixth extra-inning win this
season.
Genovese finished the day 4 for 6 at the plate with two doubles and three
runs batted in, while senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville,
NJ/Belleville) was 3 for 4. Goforth, right, earned the win, allowing one hit
and an unearned run in three innings of relief. Ryerson and Moore paced
Bloomfield at the plate with three hits apiece. Moore went the distance in
the circle for the Deacons, giving up 13 hits and seven runs, two earned,
and striking out six.
