CALDWELL EDGES DOMINICAN IN SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER

3-28-07
CC 5, DC 4
CC 1, DC 0, 8 inn.
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team won a pair of close games against Dominican College, 5-4 and 1-0 in eight innings, to sweep a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The victory gives the 14th-ranked Cougars an overall record of 11-3 and a 4-0 mark in the CACC. The Chargers, who were runners-up to Caldwell in last year's CACC Tournament, fall to 5-7, 0-2 CACC.

Dominican's Sarah Beck helped the Chargers get off to a strong start in the first inning with a two-run triple for a 2-0 lead. A pair of unearned runs in the top of the second made the score 4-0 Chargers before the Cougars answered in the bottom of the third. Freshman Alicia Langone (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) brought home Caldwell's first run of the game by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Then freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley), left, followed with a double that cleared the bases and tied the game at 4-4. Caldwell loaded the bases again in the fifth on a single and two walks. This time it was junior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) who drew a walk that scored senior Desiree Wilson (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and gave Caldwell its first lead of the game, 5-4.

Sophomore Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) held the Chargers scoreless the rest of the way to wrap up the win. De la Campa went the distance, allowing seven hits, four runs (two earned) and three walks while striking out five to improve to 4-1.

The second game was a pitcher's dual between Caldwell senior Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) and Dominican's Christine Stathes, the 2006 CACC Pitcher of the Year. Stathes cruised until the bottom of the fifth, when she walked the bases loaded with two out before a groundout ended the threat. Similarly, Webb allowed just four base runners through five innings before walking the bases full with two out in the top of the sixth. But Webb induced the next batter to ground out.

The game's lone run came in extra innings. Senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) led off the eighth inning with a single. After a pop-up, junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) singled, moving to second base sophomore Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio), who was inserted as a pinch runner for Velardi. Junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo), right, followed with a game-winning single to right center that plated Aguirre.

Webb pitched all eight innings and gave up just two hits and six walks while fanning six to improve to 5-2 on the season. Stathes also went the distance, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five and walking five in the loss.

The Cougars host Goldey-Beacom College on Friday, Mar. 31 in a CACC doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Mar. 24. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
