CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team swept a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Felician College, winning the first
game 3-2 in 10 innings before a 6-0 victory in the second game Wednesday
afternoon at Caldwell Field. Senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads),
left, had four hits on the day, including a three-run home run in Game 2.
With the wins, the Cougars are now 22-8 overall and 12-4 in the conference,
while Felician drops to 9-12, 3-9 CACC.
The first game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when Felician's
Nicole Degenhardt hit a two-out single that scored Heather Van Dyke for a
1-0 lead. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a double
by freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) that
brought home junior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). Neither
team was able to score in the next two innings, forcing extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Degenhardt doubled to left center, then came home
on a single by Nicole Broecker to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars were down to
their last out in the bottom of the eighth with sophomore Kim Aguirre
(Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) on first when Falkowski drilled a single to left
field. The ball skipped under the left fielder's glove and rolled to the
fence, allowing Aguirre to score from first and tie the game at 2-2. After a
scoreless ninth and a 1-2-3 inning for sophomore pitcher Ceci Goforth
(Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) in the top of the 10th, Caldwell came
through in the bottom of the 10th. With freshman Alicia Langone
(Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) placed on second in accordance with the
international tie-break rule, senior Desiree Wilson (Gloucester,
NJ/Gloucester Catholic) put down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by the
first baseman. Her throw to third went into left field, and Langone came home for the
game-winning run.
Sophomore Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) went eight
innings and allowed nine hits and two runs while fanning six. Goforth earned
the win after tossing two innings of scoreless relief, giving up no hits and
a walk. Broecker went the distance for the Golden Falcons, surrendering five
hits and one earned run while recording seven strikeouts.
In
the second game, Caldwell started off with a pair of runs in the bottom of
the first. Senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) tripled,
then scored on an error. Freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton,
NY/Susquehanna Valley) followed with a run-scoring single for a 2-0 lead.
Junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led off the
fourth with her first home run of the season, bouncing a long shot off the
left-field foul pole for a 3-0 advantage. Then in the fifth, with runners on
first and third, Falkowski smacked her team-leading fifth homer of the
season over the left-field fence to put the Cougars up 6-0.
Goforth, left, started the game and blanked the Golden Falcons, allowing six
hits and no walks while striking out two to improve to 6-1 with her second
victory of the day. Senior Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester
Twp.) tossed two innings of relief to complete the combined shutout. Dara
DeSocio pitched 4 1/3 innings and took the loss for Felician.
The Cougars play a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, Apr. 19, when
they take on Dowling College. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at
the PAL Sports Complex in Holbrook, N.Y.
