CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team dropped two close games with
Georgian Court University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Lions came back to
edge the Cougars 5-4 in eight innings in the first game, then held on for an
11-10 victory in the finale to improve to 12-14 overall and 8-0 in the CACC.
The losses ended a seven-game winning streak for the Cougars (13-5), who
fall to 6-2 in the conference.
Caldwell took an early lead on a two-out, two-run home run off the bat of
senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) in the bottom of
the first for a 2-0 advantage. The Lions got a run back on an RBI single by
Ashley Wierma in the top of the fifth. But the Cougars answered in the
bottom of the fifth with another two-run homer, this time by junior
Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), left, that gave Caldwell a 4-1
lead. In the top of the seventh, Wierma knocked in another run with a single
to make it 4-2 Cougars. Then with runners on first and second and two out,
Heather Walker hit a double to centerfield that tied the game at 4-4.
The Cougars threatened to win it in the bottom of the seventh, loading the
bases with two out. But Georgian Court's Samantha Sasko got out of the
inning with a groundout to send the game into extra innings. In the top of
the eighth, Stephanie Cuevas led off with a home run just inside the
leftfield foul pole to put the Lions ahead 5-4. Sasko, who gave up six hits
and four runs while fanning 12, retired the Cougars in the bottom of the
eight to clinch the comeback victory.
In
the second game, the Cougars scored first again on a groundout by senior
Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) that plated Bodrog in the
first inning. The Lions responded with two runs in the second to take a 2-1
lead, only to have the Cougars score three times in the bottom of the
second. Junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads),
freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Bodrog had
RBIs in the inning. The Cougars made it 6-2 in the bottom of the third on an
RBI single from freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton,
NY/Susquehanna Valley) and a sacrifice fly from junior Alyssa Speno
(Waterloo, NY/Waterloo), right. But a two-run double by Mallory Kirchner
sparked a four-run fourth inning that tied the game at 6-6.
Speno's two-run single in the bottom of the inning put Caldwell back on top
briefly, 8-6. Again the Lions responded, tying the game at 8-8 on Julie
Sito's two-run home run in the top of the fifth. Pamela Marshall hit
Georgian Court's third home run of the day in the sixth inning, a three-run
shot that gave the Lions an 11-8 advantage. The Cougars rallied in the
bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on RBI singles from Genovese and
Velardi, both with two out. But Sasko, who came on in relief in the second
inning, struck out the final batter with runners at first and third to wrap
up the win and the sweep.
The Lions recorded 27 hits on the day, including five from Stacey Ryan.
Velardi and Genovese each had three hits for Caldwell in the second game,
with Genovese and Speno each collecting a combined four hits in the two
games.
The Cougars play a non-conference doubleheader at the University of New
Haven on Sunday, Apr. 1, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
