SOFTBALL WINS PAIR OF CLOSE GAMES AT HOLY FAMILY

4-3-07
CC 3, HFU 2
CC 7, HFU 1 (8 inn.)
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Clutch hits by freshmen Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos), left, in the first game and Alicia Langone (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) in the second helped the Caldwell College softball team sweep Holy Family University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field. The Cougars, who won the first game 3-2 before taking Game 2 7-1 in eight innings, improved to 16-6 overall and 8-2 in the conference. The losses dropped the Tigers to 9-11, 7-3 CACC.

In the first game, the Tigers scored the game's first run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars tied the game in the top of the third when a single by senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) brought home freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston). But Holy Family answered in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Jen Escheman to regain the lead, 2-1. Pitcher Jody Searfoss proceeded to retire the next nine Cougar batters, leaving Caldwell down to its last inning. Junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) led off the seventh with a single, then junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) walked. After Langone bunted the runners to second and third, Timbrook came in as a pinch hitter and singled home Speno and Flasphaler for a 3-2 Caldwell lead. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) gave up a lead-off single before retiring the next three batters to end the game.

De la Campa pitched all seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking none to improve to 6-1. Searfoss also went the distance and took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits.

The second game was another pitcher's battle that saw Caldwell senior Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) and Bridget Robinson of Holy Family shut out their opponents for the first six innings. In fact, the Cougars managed just one hit off Robinson until the seventh inning. Genovese was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). As she did in the first game, Falkowski drove in Genovese with a single that put Caldwell ahead 1-0. But Holy Family responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh off a sacrifice fly from Lauren Armstrong that tied the game at 1-1. The Tigers loaded the bases with two out in the seventh, but Webb induced a groundout to send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Caldwell's first three batters reached base to load the bases. Langone, right, was inserted as a pinch hitter and responded with a grand slam home run to left field that put Caldwell on top 5-1. It was Langone's second home run of the season. Speno then followed with a solo home run to centerfield, the first of her career, that made it 6-1 and ended the day for Robinson. The Cougars added another run on a double by Flasphaler that scored Genovese for a 7-1 advantage. Holy Family put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the eight, but another groundout wrapped up the win for Caldwell and Webb, who went the distance to improve to 7-4.

Webb allowed seven hits and an unearned run while fanning six batters. She has given up just one earned run in her last 16 innings pitched. Speno had four hits in seven at-bats on the day to pace the Cougar bats.

The 14th-ranked Cougars host Queens College in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, Apr. 5. The first game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
