KISSIMMEE,
Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team won its first game of the 2007
season, a 10-9 victory over Indiana University (Pa.), before losing 5-0 to
Ashland University in the day’s second game at the Rebel Spring Games Friday
afternoon at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex. The Cougars, ranked 12th
in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25, open
the season 1-1.
In the day’s first game, the Cougars jumped out to a four-run lead with two
runs in each of the first two innings. Junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo,
NY/Waterloo) scored the game’s first run on an error, then freshman Alicia
Langone (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) knocked home senior Jackie
Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) with a single in her first collegiate
at-bat. In the bottom of the second, junior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel,
NJ/Lenape), pictured, scored on Speno’s triple. Velardi followed with a
run-scoring single that plated Speno for a 4-0 lead. Indiana answered in the
top of the third with a three-run home run by Sam Goettman. Becky Petro tied
the game with a solo shot in the fourth, then Goettman put Indiana ahead 6-4
with a two-run home run in the fifth.
The Cougars took advantage of three walks and three wild pitches in the fifth
to score five runs and take a 9-6 lead. Sophomore Stephanie Brodo
(Belleville, NJ/Belleville) had an RBI single, and Bodrog hit a two-run double
in the inning. But a bases-loaded double by Hilary Tutrani in the top of the
sixth knotted the game at 9-9. In the bottom of the seventh, junior outfielder
Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led off with a single,
then advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Brittni Frantellizzi
(Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley). After a groundout, Bodrog singled to left
field, scoring Flasphaler from second base.
Bodrog went 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs, while Speno and Velardi each
had two hits. Sophomore pitcher Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes
Academy) earned the win, giving up five runs and five hits in three innings of
relief. Starter Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) went four
innings, allowing four hits and four runs in her first start for the Cougars.
In the loss to Ashland, Caldwell managed just four hits off of pitcher
Samantha Hendrix, who went the distance for the shutout. Brodo, Flashphaler,
sophomore Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) and freshman
Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford), right, had the hits for the Cougars. Sophomore
Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) pitched four innings,
giving up seven hits and four earned runs to take the loss.
Caldwell continues play at the Rebel Spring Games with games against Minnesota
State-Mankato and Queens College.
