COUGARS DOWN MOLLOY IN SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER

4-26-07
CC 2, MC 1 (8 inn.)
CC 9, MC 0 (5 inn.)
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Molloy College Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. Freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) hit a sacrifice fly that scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth of Game 1 for a 2-1 victory. The Cougars (30-12) then pounded out 11 hits in five innings for a 9-0 win in the second game. The sweep gives the Cougars five straight seasons with at least 30 victories.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the first inning of Game 1 when junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) bunted the ball just in front of the plate. The catcher fielded the ball, but her throw to first went high and rolled to the right-field fence, allowing Speno to come all the way around to score. Molloy (21-19) tied the game in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Katie Scotko. The score remained 1-1 into the eighth inning. Molloy put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the eight, but senior pitcher Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) retired the next two batters on a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.

Speno led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, then advanced to third on a single by senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). After a walk loaded the bases, Frantellizzi hit a fly ball to left field that was caught. Speno tagged up at third and scored easily for the Cougars' eighth extra-inning victory. Velardi and senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) each had three hits for Caldwell. Webb pitched all eight innings and struck out eight batters while giving up five hits and one run to improve to 13-8. Scotko also went the distance in the circle for the Lions, allowing nine hits and two runs.

The Cougars took the lead early in the second game. Freshman Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) singled home Frantellizzi in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead. In the third, freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) led off with a double, then scored on Velardi's single. After Falkowski singled to put runners of first and second, junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) hit a three-run home run, her fifth of the year, to make the score 5-0. Freshman Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) followed with a shot to centerfield for her first career home run to put the Cougars ahead 6-0.

Caldwell continued to pour on the offense in the fifth. Three straight singles by senior Desiree Wilson (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Genovese and Speno pushed another run across for a 7-0 advantage. A groundout by sophomore Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) plated Genovese, then Frantellizzi drove home Speno with a single to put the Cougars up 9-0.

Sophomore pitchers Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) and Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) combined for the shutout, allowing just one hit. De la Campa earned the win, going four innings to improve to 9-2. Amanda Havdoglous took the loss for Molloy.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Apr. 28, when they complete their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with a doubleheader against Wilmington College. The first pitch is at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
