COUGARS WIN PAIR AT REBEL GAMES

3-17-07
CC 6, MSU 5 (9 inn.)
CC 5, QC 1
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team came back to beat Minnesota State-Mankato 6-5 in nine innings, then defeated Queens College 5-1 at the Rebel Spring Games Saturday afternoon at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex. Freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston), left, recorded three doubles, a triple and six RBIs on the day to lead Caldwell at the plate. With the sweep, the 12th-ranked Cougars improve to 3-1 on the 2007 season.

In the day’s first win, the Cougars trailed 3-0 after Minnesota State scored twice in the second and once in the fourth, including a solo home run by Abby Wagner. Caldwell managed just two hits in the first five innings and didn’t get on the scoreboard until freshman Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) doubled home Genovese in the bottom of the sixth. Needing two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars got a lead-off single from freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley). After sophomore Stephanie Brodo (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary's) walked, freshman Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) bunted the runners over to second and third. Junior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Frantellizzi and made the score 3-2. With two out and Brodo on second, Genovese doubled to right center, plating Brodo and sending the game into extra innings.

After the Mavericks scored a run in the top of the eighth, junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) hit a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth to score sophomore Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) from third to tie the game at 4-4. MSU again pushed a run across in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk and had an opportunity to increase its lead. But pitcher Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) induced an infield pop-up to end the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, with runners on second and third and two out, Genovese came through again with a game-winning two-run double.

Webb, right, pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits and two unearned runs to pick up the victory. Sophomore starter Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) gave up nine hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Against Queens, Caldwell scored a run in the top of the fourth after Genovese doubled, then came home on a single by senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). Webb took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a leadoff single. Queens tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Timbrook knocked home the go-ahead run on an infield grounder with the bases loaded. Then with two outs and the bases full of Cougars, Genovese hit a three-run triple, capping an outstanding day for the freshman shortstop.

Webb gave up just two hits and an unearned run while striking out four to win her second game of the day. Goforth relieved Webb in the seventh and recorded three straight outs.

Caldwell continues play at the Rebel Spring Games with a doubleheader against Minnesota-Duluth on Sunday, Mar. 18, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
