COUGARS BEGIN CACC SCHEDULE WITH SWEEP OF NYACK

3-27-07
CC 14, NC 1
CC 9, NC 4
NYACK, N.Y. - Freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston), right, went 6 for 7 with five runs and three runs batted in as the 14th-ranked Caldwell College softball team swept a doubleheader at Nyack College Tuesday afternoon at Hilltop Field. The wins came in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games of the season for the Cougars, who improved to 9-3. The Warriors drop to 3-10.

In the day's first game, the Cougars scored seven runs in the first and fourth innings en route to a 14-1 victory. Junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) struck the big blow in the first with a bases-loaded double that put Caldwell ahead 4-0. Freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and junior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) also had run-scoring singles in the first frame. Caldwell opened the fourth inning with three straight singles to load the bases. After a force out at home, freshman Alicia Langone (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) singled to bring home freshman Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos). Frantellizzi followed with a two-run single, then sophomore Stephanie Brodo (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary's) belted a three-run home run, the first round-tripper of her career, to give the Cougars a 13-0 bulge. Genevese closed out the scoring with her first career home run, a solo shot that made it 14-0.

Senior pitcher Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) pitched all five innings, allowing one run and six hits while striking out four. Genovese, Brodo and senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) each had three hits in the game.

The second game was close throughout, with Caldwell breaking a 4-4 tie with five runs in the top of the seventh to earn a 9-4 win. The Cougars started fast in Game 2 as well, getting a two-run double from senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), left, in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead. The Warriors tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back home runs by Melanie Susen and Bryane Hennessy. Bodrog put Caldwell back on top with a lead-off home run in the top of the third, her first of the season. Falkowski's sacrifice fly later in the third plated Genovese to give the Cougars a 4-2 advantage. Again, Nyack answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4. The Warriors threatened to take the lead, loading the bases with one out in the third. But Webb came on in relief of sophomore Ceci Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) and got Mel Williamson to fly out to left field. Speno threw out Danielle Palentchar at third on the play to end the inning.

Genovese concluded her productive day with a two-run triple in the top of the seventh that gave Caldwell a 6-4 lead. Velardi, Speno and junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) also had run-scoring hits in the final inning to put the Cougars ahead 9-4. Webb (4-2), who did not allow a run in her three innings of work in the second game, gave up a lead-off single to Susen in the bottom of the seventh, then retired the next three batters to wrap up the sweep. Bodrog and Genovese each had three hits in the second game. On the day, Genovese had three singles, a double, a triple and a home run to improve her team-leading batting average to .514.

The Cougars play their first home doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, Mar. 28 against Dominican College in a rematch of last season's CACC Tournament final. The games, which were originally scheduled to be played at Dominican, will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
