PHILADELPHIA,
Pa. - Senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Bellevile) and junior
Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), right, hit home runs to help the
Caldwell College softball team win a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference games at Philadelphia University Saturday afternoon. The
victories give the Cougars (24-10), ranked 16th nationally, a 14-4 mark in
the conference, while the Rams (9-23) fall to 5-11 in the CACC.
Philadelphia scored the first run of the first game in the bottom of the
fourth on a solo home run by Lindsey Field. Caldwell answered with five runs
in the top of the fifth, including a three-run homer by Bodrog, her fifth of
the season. Sophomore Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) and
freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) also scored in
the inning on an error for a 5-1 lead. Genovese drove in the game's final
run with a single in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson)
improved to 8-1 on the year after allowing three hits and one run in six
innings of work. Jacque Curtis pitched five innings and took the loss for
Philadelphia.
The
Cougars started off Game 2 with a run in the first on a double by senior
Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) that plated Genovese. Then
in the third, Velardi (left) hit her first home run of the season, a two-run
shot that gave Caldwell a 3-0 lead. A two-run double by freshman Alicia
Langone (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) in the top of the fourth made
it 5-0 before Maureen Keenan led off the bottom of the fourth with a home
run for Philadelphia. Junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) had
an RBI single in the fifth for a 6-1 advantage. After the Rams scored an
unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars scored six times in the
top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Falkowski, Aguirre and Speno
each had RBIs in the inning.
Senior Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) pitched five
innings and gave up three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out
seven to improve to 10-7. Kelly Rauco absorbed the loss after tossing 3 1/3
innings for the Rams.
The Cougars host Pace University in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday,
Apr. 22. The first game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
