WATERBURY,
Conn. - The 16th-ranked Caldwell College softball team defeated Post
University twice, 3-1 in eight innings and 7-1, for a sweep of a Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy
Field. Senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) hit a
two-run single in the top of the eighth for the winning runs in the first
game. The victories give the Cougars a 28-12 overall record, including a
16-4 mark in the conference. The Eagles fall to 13-21, 9-9 CACC with the
losses.
The Cougars scored the first run of Game 1 in the top of the first, when
freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) came home on a
groundout by senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). The
Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on Amanda Misa's RBI
double. Both teams put a runner in scoring position in each of the next two
innings but neither could score. In the top of the eighth, freshman
Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) reached on an error, then advanced to
third two batters later on a single by Genovese. With runners at first and
third and two out, Falkowski came through with a single that scored both Day
and Genovese for a 3-1 lead. Senior pitcher Nicole Webb (Toms River,
NJ/Manchester Twp.) allowed a single in the bottom of the eighth but retired
the other three batters to wrap up the win.
Webb, left, struck out a season-high 12 batters while giving up seven hits
and one run in the complete-game victory to improve to 12-8 on the season.
Caitlin McAveney also went the distance, allowing four hits and three runs,
all unearned, to drop to 6-6.
Freshman
Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) helped get
the Cougars off to a good start in the second game with a two-run single in
the top of the first. Caldwell loaded the bases on three consecutive singles
to lead off the top of the second, then took a 3-0 lead when Genovese was
hit by a pitch. Falkowski hit a sacrifice fly that plated junior Nicole
Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) for a 4-0 advantage. Samantha Canning's
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second made it 4-1. The Cougars finished
strong as well, getting RBI doubles from Genovese, Bodrog and junior
Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) in the fourth, sixth and
seventh innings, respectively.
Bodrog finished the game 3 for 3 with three runs and an RBI, while Genovese
and Flasphaler each recorded two hits. Sophomore Ceci Goforth
(Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy), right, turned in a solid performance in the
circle, allowing four hits and one run in seven innings to improve to 8-2.
Megan Pappas pitched all seven innings for Post and took the loss.
The Cougars host Molloy College in a non-conference doubleheader on
Thursday, Apr. 26. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell
Field.
