SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team wrapped up its spring trip to Florida with a split of a doubleheader with St. Leo University at University Field Wednesday evening. The Cougars (7-3), ranked 14th in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 poll, lost the first game 2-1 before winning 3-1 in the nightcap. The victory in Game 2 snapped St. Leo's 12-game winning streak, dropping the Lions to 20-12.

The Cougars started the doubleheader with a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) hit a double to left center that brought home freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston), pictured. The Lions tied the game on a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth. Then in the sixth, Ally Maddox hit a lead-off home run to put the Lions ahead 2-1. St. Leo pitcher Ashley Urbanik retired the Cougars in order in the seventh to extend the Lions’ winning streak to 12.

Senior pitcher Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) turned in a strong performance, allowing two runs on seven hits over five-plus innings. Urbanik  scattered four hits over seven innings for the complete-game win.

In the second game, the Cougars again started strong, putting three runs on the board in the first frame. Genovese singled, then scored on a two-out double by senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). Junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) followed with a single that knocked home Falkowski, then a bloop single by junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) plated Flasphaler and put the Cougars ahead 3-0. St. Leo scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1 Caldwell. But junior pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) allowed just three hits over the final four innings to close out the win.

Genovese led Caldwell at the plate with two hits and a run, while de la Campa went the distance and gave up six hits and a run to improve to 3-1.

The Cougars are scheduled to play Goldey-Beacom College in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Saturday, Mar. 24 at Caldwell Field.
