HAVEN, Conn. - The Caldwell College softball team, ranked 14th nationally,
defeated the University of New Haven 8-2 in the first game before losing 1-0
on a home run in the bottom of the seventh in Game 2 in a non-conference
doubleheader Sunday afternoon at New Haven's softball field. The results
give the Cougars a 14-6 record on the season, while the Chargers are now
14-8.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first game on a sacrifice fly from
junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) that scored
freshman Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) in
the top of the second inning. Four more runs in the fourth gave Caldwell a
5-0 advantage. Senior Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads),
left, started things off with a solo home run, her second of the weekend.
Flasphaler knocked in her second run of the game with a single, then came
home along with junior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) on a
two-run single from senior Desiree Wilson (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic). In the top of the fifth, freshman Danielle Genovese
(Livingston, NJ/Livingston) hit her second home run to make the score 6-0.
New Haven tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth, but RBIs from Falkowski
and senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) in the top of
the seventh gave the cougars an 8-1 advantage. An RBI single from New
Haven's Jordanna Borska in the bottom of the seventh completed the scoring.
Sophomore
pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) went the
distance, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned, to improve to 5-1 on
the year. Genovese went 3 for 4 in the game, while Falkowski, Wilson and
Flasphaler each brought home two runs.
The second game featured pitchers Nicole Webb (Toms River,
NJ/Manchester Twp.), right, of Caldwell and New Haven's Breanne Gleason, who
combined to allow just five hits and three walks in the game. The lone run
was scored on a walk-off home run by Jessica Medina to lead off the seventh
inning. The Cougars loaded the bases with two out in the fourth and had a
runner on second in the fifth, but were unable to push a run across the
plate. Gleason allowed two hits and walked two while striking out five in
seven innings, while Webb gave up three hits and walked one while fanning
six in six innings. Speno and Genovese had the two hits for Caldwell.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 3 for a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Holy Family University in
Philadelphia, Pa.
