CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team fell in nine innings in Game 1
before winning the second game 3-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference doubleheader with Wilmington College Saturday afternoon at
Caldwell Field. The results give the Cougars an overall record of 31-13,
including a conference mark of 17-5, while the Wildcats are now 27-13, 14-6
CACC.
The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when senior
Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) hit a three-run home run
over the left field fence, scoring senior Jackie Velardi (Belleville,
NJ/Belleville) and freshman Danielle Genovese (Livingston,
NJ/Livingston). The Wildcats answered with a run in the top of the sixth on
an RBI double by Kelly Schirmer. Then in the top of the seventh, with
Wilmington down to its final out, Lindsay Watson followed back-to-back
singles with a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3. In the top of the
ninth, Heather Bush singled home a run and Lindsay Frye hit a sacrifice fly
that scored Shustine Wilson for a 5-3 advantage. Genovese hit an RBI single
in the bottom of the ninth to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Velardi flied out
to end the game.
Senior Nicole Webb (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp.) pitched all nine
innings, fanning seven and allowing 11 hits to drop to 13-8 on the season.
Genovese, Velardi and juniors Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape)
and Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) each recorded two hits in
the loss. Wilmington's Kim Lawrence also went the distance for Wilmington,
giving up nine hits and four runs.
In
Game 2, Amanda Mucaria singled home a run in the top of the first for a 1-0
Wildcats lead. In the bottom of the first, Genovese doubled home Bodrog to
tie the game at 1-1. Then in the third, Velardi's double plated Genovese to
put the Cougars up 2-1. Later in the inning, Velardi came home on a single
by junior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NJ/Horseheads) for a 3-1
advantage. That's all the offense the Cougars would need, as sophomore
pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) scattered
three hits over the final four innings to wrap up the win.
De la Campa allowed six hits and one run while striking out five to improve
to 10-2 on the season. Bodrog and Genovese each had four hits on the day to
power the Cougars' offense. Katie Turner gave up eight hits and three runs
and took the loss for Wilmington.
The Game 2 victory clinches at least the No. 2 seed in next week's CACC
Tournament for the Cougars, who are the three-time defending conference
champions.
Caldwell returns to action on Monday, Apr. 30 with a non-conference
doubleheader against No. 19 Adelphi University at Caldwell Field. Game time
is set for 3:00 p.m.
