GARDEN
CITY, N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team lost a pair of games to
Adelphi University, 3-1 and 3-2 in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday
afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field. The sweep leaves the Cougars with a 13-11
record, while the Panthers improve to 22-14. Freshman Annie Forte
(Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) hit her first career home run in the
second game.
In the first game, Adelphi put runs on the scoreboard in the first and
second innings for a 2-0 lead. Caldwell answered in the top of the third,
when junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) followed
singles by senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and sophomore
Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) with a double that
scored Bodrog to make the score 2-1. But the Cougars could not score more
than the one run in the inning despite having runners at second and third
with no outs. Adelphi added an insurance run in the fifth for a 3-1
advantage.
Freshman Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) gave up seven hits and
three runs in six innings to fall to 7-3 on the season. Adelphi's Julie
Schaper (10-2) held the Cougars to six hits and one run in six innings of
work.
Caldwell got on the board first in Game 2, when Forte led off the top of the
second with a solo home run, her first as a Cougar. Adelphi tied the game in
the bottom of the second, loading the bases and scoring a run on a grounder.
Deidre White's run-scoring double in the bottom of the third put the
Panthers on top 2-1. Then in the fourth, an RBI single by Samantha Johnston
gave Adelphi a 3-1 lead. The Cougars made it 3-2 when sophomore Kyrie
Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) singled home Capardi in the top of
the sixth. Despite advancing a runner to third in the top of the seventh,
Caldwell was unable to tie the game.
Junior Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) allowed six
hits and three runs, two earned, in 3 2/3 innings, while junior Cecilia
Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of
relief. Leighann Bell pitched the final five innings of the game for Adelphi
to earn the decision. Capardi finished the day with four hits to lead the
Cougar bats.
Caldwell hosts Queens College on Wednesday, Apr. 9, in a non-conference
doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Mar. 31 at Queens. The first
game begins at 2:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
