CAPARDI NAMED CACC SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) was chosen the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Player of the Year, as the league announced its year-end awards today. Capardi was one of six all-CACC honorees from Caldwell, which finished second in the regular-season standings with a 19-5 record (30-20 overall). Other Cougars chosen to the all-CACC first team include senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), sophomores Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos), and freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). Freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) made the second team.

Capardi, a second baseman, leads the conference in hits (69), runs batted in (43) and total bases (110), while pacing the Cougars in batting (.423), home runs (seven), triples (four) and slugging percentage (.675). She was named the CACC Player of the Week on Apr. 1 after batting .588 with nine runs batted in, 10 runs scored, two triples and a home run in six games. In 163 at-bats this season, Capardi has struck out just four times to rank 11th nationally.

Bodrog makes her first appearance on the all-CACC first team after earning second team honors in 2006 and 2007. The Cougars' starter at third base for four years, Bodrog is batting .315 with 13 doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI this season. She has 180 hits and 85 RBI for her career. Genovese, the 2007 CACC Rookie of the Year, is a repeat selection on the first team after batting .328 with three homers and 17 RBI. The shortstop bounced back after missing 11 games due to an injury suffered in the second game of the season to rank fourth on the team in batting.

Timbrook debuts on the first team after batting .383 with 54 hits and 25 RBI. The Cougars' second-leading hitter, Timbrook also excels in the, having committed just one error in 294 chances at first base and catcher. Forte has had an outstanding freshman campaign, leading the team in doubles (16) while ranking second in RBI (39) and home runs (four) and third in batting (.367). A designated player and pitcher, Forte was named the CACC Rookie of the Week on Apr. 14 after recording three home runs, four doubles and nine RBI in 10 games. Pulido has a 13-7 record with six shutouts and 129 2/3 innings pitched, all team highs, in her first collegiate season. A two-time CACC Rookie of the Week honoree and the conference's Pitcher of the Week on  Apr. 24, Pulido pitched a three-hit shutout of No. 5 Lock Haven University in her first career appearance on Mar. 15. She ranks 15th in the nation in walks per seven innings (0.92).

The Cougars, coached by Dean Johnson, host the CACC Tournament, beginning today through Saturday, May 3. All games will be played at Caldwell Field.
