THREE COUGARS SELECTED TO SOFTBALL ALL-REGION TEAMS

5-9-08
CALDWELL, N.J. - Three Caldwell College softball players have been named all-Northeast Region by Daktronics and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the organizations announced this week. Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) is a first team selection on both all-Region teams, while senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) made the second teams.

The Daktronics all-Region teams are selected by the sports information directors of the member institutions in each region, while the NFCA teams are selected by the coaches. As a first team choice, Capardi is now a candidate for all-America honors.

Capardi, a second baseman who was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year last week, leads the CACC in hits (79), runs batted in (50) and total bases (123), while pacing the Cougars in batting (.436), home runs (seven), triples (four) and slugging percentage (.680). She was named to the CACC all-Tournament Team after going 8-for-11 (.727) with two doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored. In 181 at-bats this season, Capardi has struck out just four times to rank 11th nationally.

Bodrog earned a spot on the all-CACC first team this season after earning second team honors in 2006 and 2007. The Cougars' starter at third base for four years, Bodrog is batting .330 with 15 doubles, four home runs and 30 RBI this season. She also had an outstanding CACC Tournament, batting .500 with six runs, two doubles and two RBIs in three wins. Bodrog also recorded a season-high eight assists at third base in Caldwell's 11-4 victory over Georgian Court University in the final on May 3.

Forte made the all-CACC first team in her first collegiate season after leading the Cougars in doubles (16) while ranking second in RBIs (43) and home runs (four) and third in batting (.363). A designated player and pitcher, Forte was named the CACC Rookie of the Week on Apr. 14 after recording three home runs, four doubles and nine RBI in 10 games. In the Cougars' 9-6 triumph over Georgian Court at the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament on May 7, Forte went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Cougars, coached by Dean Johnson, currently are participating in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament, their fourth regional appearance in five years. Next up for Caldwell, seeded fourth, is an elimination game against third-seeded Adelphi University on Saturday, May 10 at the C.W. Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y.
