DC 7, CC 6
ORANGEBURG,
N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team lost a pair of Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference games to Dominican College, 10-2 and 7-6 Friday
afternoon at the Dominican College Softball Field. The defeats drop the
Cougars to 21-17 overall and 11-3 in the conference, while the Lady Chargers
improve to 20-17, 12-2 CACC.
Caldwell opened the first game with a run in the top of the first on a
single by junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) that
scored senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) from second.
After Dominican scored twice in the bottom of the first, the Cougars tied
the game in the top of the third, when Bodrog, pictured, came home a single
by sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston). But the
Lady Chargers put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning that included
three-run home runs by Jackie Terpstra and Nicole Scarillo.
Freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) took the loss
for Caldwell, while Christine Stathes allowed three hits and two runs in
five innings for the win.
In the second game, Dominican scored two runs in the second and third
innings apiece to take a 4-0 lead. Caldwell answered in the top of the
fourth, tying the game with four runs. Genovese and Capardi scored on an
error, while seniors Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) and
Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) drove in runs to tie the
game at 4-4. The Lady Chargers regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth
on a two-run homer by Cara Piasecki for a 6-4 lead. Then in the top of the
sixth, the Cougars loaded the bases, scoring runs on a grounder by freshman
Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford) and a sacrifice fly by
Bodrog to tie the game at 6-6. After the two teams failed to score in their
next chances, Scarillo led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off
home run to end the game.
Stathes came on in relief in the fourth and earned the victory. Junior
Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) pitched three innings
and gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out four to take the
loss.
The Cougars play another CACC doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 19 at
Wilmington University, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
