4-3-08

CC 9, NYIT 7
CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team lost the first game with N.Y.I.T.,
3-1 before winning the second game 9-7 in a non-conference doubleheader
Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. Senior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo,
NY/Waterloo), right, drove in three runs on the day for the Cougars, who are
now 10-8 on the season. The Bears, who are ranked fourth in the latest
Northeast Region rankings, are 16-6 overall.
In the first game, N.Y.I.T. scored all of its runs in the top of the sixth.
Courtney Palma led off with a triple, then Lauren Sabia and Brilynn Fields
followed with doubles to put the Bears ahead 2-0. A wild pitch scored Fields
from third, making the score 3-0. Caldwell managed to score just one run on
Speno's solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, as Nina Cesare allowed
just four hits in seven innings to improve to 10-3. Freshman Brittany
Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) fell to 5-2 after giving up six hits and
three runs in five innings.
The Cougar bats heated up in Game 2. After spotting the Bears a 2-0 lead,
Caldwell scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the first. Sophomore
Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) singled home
senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), then later scored on a
two-run double by freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River
North), who would score on an error for a 4-0 lead. Senior Carrie
Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) hit a run-scoring double and then
came home on a single by sophomore Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford)
to put the Cougars up 6-0.
The Bears answered in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs that cut the
Cougars' lead to 6-4. But Speno put the game out of reach with a two-run
triple in the bottom of the fifth. She also scored that inning on
Flasphaler's grounder for a 9-4 advantage. N.Y.I.T. scored once in the
sixth, then put two more runs on the board when Katelyn Thomas hit a two-run
single in the seventh. But it was not enough, as junior Cecilia Goforth
(Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) closed out the game for her second save of the
season. Junior Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson)
started the game and gave up five hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings to
improve to 3-2. At the plate, Frantellizzi went 3-for-4, while Flasphaler
and sophomore Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) had two hits
apiece.
The Cougars host the University of the Sciences on Saturday, Apr. 5 in a
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. The first game is set
to start at 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
