SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH PACE
3-26-08
PU 7, CC 6 (9 inn.)
CC 8, PU 6
BRIARCLIFF,
N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team split a non-conference
doubleheader with Pace University Wednesday afternoon at Pace Field. The
Cougars (7-7) lost the first game 7-6 in nine innings, then came back to win
the second game, 8-6. The Setters are now 7-3 overall on the season.
Caldwell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game with a pair of runs in
the top of the second inning. Sophomore Sydney Day (Houston,
TX/Stratford) singled home freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville,
PA/Spring Hill), stole second and came home on a single by senior Nicole
Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). But the Setters answered with four runs
in the bottom of the second, with three coming on Dana Jo Ketchel's home run
for a 4-2 lead. Bodrog's run-scoring single in the top of the fourth cut the
Setters' lead to 4-3, but an RBI single from Ketchel in the bottom of the
fifth made it 5-3 in favor of Pace.
Caldwell again pulled to within one when sophomore Kyrie Timbrook
(Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) led off the sixth with her first home run of the
season. Then in the top of the seventh, Timbrook's grounder brought home
junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) from third for the
game-tying run. After a scoreless eighth inning, Bodrog was placed on second
base to start the top of the ninth. Senior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo,
NY/Waterloo) bunted Bodrog over to third, then Capardi, right, hit a
sacrifice fly to plate Bodrog with the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the
ninth, with Michelle Forgione placed on second, Tricia Allutto led off the
inning with a walk-off, two-run home run to left field. Kiryl Shada pitched
all nine innings for the Setters to earn the win, with junior Cecilia
Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) taking the loss after working 3
1/3 innings in relief.
In
Game 2, the Cougars scored a run in the first inning on another sacrifice
fly from Capardi. Pace responded with four runs in the bottom of the first,
including a two-run home run by Alton Frisbie. Caldwell battled back in the
top of the second, scoring runs on a double from senior Carrie Flasphaler
(Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and a single by Day. Then in the third,
sophomore Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley),
left, belted a two-run home run to put the Cougars ahead 5-4. Again the
Setters came back, getting a two-run single from Kerri McLean in the bottom
of the third to regain the lead, 6-5. The score held until the top of the
sixth, when Flasphaler scored the tying run off a single by Speno. Capardi
followed with a two-run home run, her first as a Cougar, to put Caldwell
ahead to stay, 8-6.
Junior Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) allowed nine
hits and six runs in five innings to improve to 2-2 on the season. Freshman
Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) pitched two scoreless innings to
earn her first career save. Capardi went 4-for-7 on the day with three runs
and four RBIs, while Flasphaler was 3-for-6 with two runs.
Caldwell hosts conference newcomer Chestnut Hill College in a Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 29. The first
game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
