CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team lost its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game of the season, a 2-1 defeat in eight innings to Philadelphia University, before coming back to beat the Rams 7-4 and split the doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The results give the Cougars an overall record of 18-12 and a 9-1 mark in the conference, while the Rams are 8-18, 4-8 CACC.

Caldwell scored a run in the first inning, when freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), right, doubled home junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell). Philadelphia tied the game in the top of the third on an infield single that scored Maureen Keenan from third. With the game still tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh with two out and senior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) on second, senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) hit the ball deep to left field. But Keenan reached high enough to make an outstanding catch and preserve the tie. Keenan led off the top of the eight with an infield single, advanced to second on a sacrifice, then came home on Jacque Curtis' single for a 2-1 Rams lead. Curtis, who pitched all eight innings to earn the win and improve to 5-7 on the season, retired the Cougars in order in the eighth.

Freshman Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) went the distance for Caldwell, giving up two runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out three to fall to 9-4.

In the second game, the Cougars fell behind 1-0 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Capardi came home on a wild pitch, then sophomore Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) singled home a pair of runs for a 3-1 lead. Forte hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field that made the score 5-1. Speno led off the fourth with a triple and came home on Capardi's single. Then in the sixth, Bodrog doubled to score freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford) for a 7-1 Caldwell advantage. The Rams scored three runs in the top of the seventh, including two on a single by Keenan, to make the final score 7-4.

Junior Cecilia Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out three to improve to 4-2. Philadelphia starter Randi Wozniak (2-8) lasted three innings and took the loss.

Next up for Caldwell is a non-conference doubleheader at 13th-ranked C.W. Post on Sunday, Apr. 13. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. in Brookville, N.Y.
