CALDWELL SOFTBALL TOPS QUEENS IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team pounded out 27 hits and scored a total of 19 runs to sweep Queens College in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars won both games in five innings, 9-1 and 10-0, to improve to 15-11 on the season, while Queens drops to 11-17. Sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston), right, went 5-for-7 with a home run while scoring five runs on the day.

The Cougars opened the scoring in Game 1 with three runs in the bottom of the first. Genovese singled home senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), then scored along with junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) on a two-run single by sophomore Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos). After Queens scored on a run-scoring double by Allison Castellucci in the top of the second, RBI singles by Bodrog and Capardi in the bottom of the second made it 5-1 Caldwell. The Cougars scored an unearned run in the third, then Genovese hit a solo home run to left with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) also knocked in a run with a single in the fourth to put Caldwell ahead 8-1. Capardi singled home Bodrog in the fifth to end the game at 9-1.

Capardi went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Bodrog, Genovese, Timbrook, Speno and sophomore Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) each had two hits. Freshman Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) improved to 8-3 on the year, allowing four hits and one run in four innings. Jessica Hicks (3-4) took the loss for Queens.

In the second game, the Cougars scored runs in the bottom of the second on an error and a squeeze play executed by Speno for a 2-0 lead. Five more runs in the third made the score 7-0. After Timbrook singled home Genovese, Speno hit a two-run triple to right-center. Fellow senior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) followed with a two-run home run to centerfield, her first of the season, for a 7-0 lead. Caldwell closed out the scoring in the fourth inning on a three-run homer by freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), her second home run in three games. Genovese and Forte each went 3-for-3 in the second game, with Forte scoring three runs to go with her three RBIs. Speno also drove in three runs.

Junior pitcher Cecilia Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) and Forte combined for the shutout, with Goforth (3-2) allowing three hits in four innings to pick up the win. Bryttne Nelson went the distance for Queens to fall to 4-5 on the season.

The Cougars play at Goldey-Beacom College on Thursday, Apr. 10 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Wilmington, Del.
