KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Caldwell College softball
team shut out fifth-ranked Lock Haven University, 1-0, then fell to
Wisconsin-Parkside, 8-4 on the second day of the Rebel Spring Games at the
fortune Road Complex Saturday afternoon. The results even the Cougars’
record at 2-2 on the season. Freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai,
CA/Nordhoff) pitched a three-hitter over the Lady Eagles, who were last
year’s NCAA Division II runners-up.
Against Lock Haven, Caldwell scored the game’s only run in the top of the
fourth. Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) led off with
a single through the left side, then stole second. With one out, sophomore
Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) hit a hard grounder down the
first base line that Erica Eisenbise could not handle. Capardi came around
from second base to score for a 1-0 Caldwell lead.
Pulido made the lead stand, holding the Lady Eagles to three hits while
striking out three and walking none in her first collegiate appearance.
Pulido went the distance to outduel two-time All-American pitcher Kristin
Erb, who allowed two hits and a walk while fanning nine.
Wisconsin-Parkside broke the game open with four runs in the top of the
fifth to make the score 6-0. The Cougars answered in the bottom of the
fifth. After loading the bases with two singles and a walk, sophomore
Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) and senior Nicole Bodrog (Mr.
Laurel, NJ/Lenape) both walked to bring home freshman Patti Garofolo
(Collegeville, PA/Springford) and senior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads,
NY/Horseheads). Then with one out, Capardi singled home Day and Bodrog to
make the score 6-4. But the Cougars were unable to catch the Rangers, who
won their fourth straight game.
Caldwell pitchers allowed 14 hits, while the defense committed four errors
that resulted in seven unearned runs. Junior pitcher Kristen de la Campa
(Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) gave up six hits and two runs to take the loss,
while Mandi Andrews earned the victory for UW-Parkside.
Next up for the Cougars at the Rebel Spring Games is No. 7 Nebraska Omaha
and Augustana College on Sunday, Mar. 16.
