KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) hurled a two-hit shutout to defeat the University of New Haven 3-0, as the Caldwell College softball team went 1-1 at the Rebel Spring Games Monday afternoon at the Osceola County Softball Complex. The Cougars, who also lost to Concordia (Neb.) College, 6-3, end the day with a 3-5 record on the season.

Against New Haven (2-3), the Cougars struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) was hit by a pitch to start the game, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NJ/Waterloo). Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) followed with a single, and Bodrog beat the throw home for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) tripled down the right-field line to score Capardi, then stole home on a double steal with freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Hill) to put the Cougars ahead 3-0.

Pulido made it stand up, allowing lone hits in the third and seventh innings for her second shutout in three starts this season. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week, Pulido blanked No. 5 Lock Haven University with a three-hitter on Mar. 15.

Concordia (6-2), scored four runs in the bottom of the first and another in the third to take a 5-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Frantellizzi hit a two-out single that scored Capardi for Caldwell's first run of the game. Then in the sixth, freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) doubled home Capardi and Frantellizzi to cut the deficit to 5-3. But a solo home run by Charlotte Kaeding to lead off the bottom of the sixth put Concordia up 6-3. The Cougars were unable to score in the ninth and dropped their third straight game. Forte gave up eight hits and six runs, three earned, in five innings to take the loss.

Capardi (pictured) went 6-for-6 with a double, three runs and an RBI on the day to lead the Cougar bats.

Caldwell ends its stay in Florida with games against Northern State and the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday, Mar. 18.
