CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team engaged in a couple of pitcher's duals with the University of New Haven, splitting a non-conference doubleheader with the Chargers Sunday afternoon at Caldwell Field. Freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) shut down New Haven (9-11) in the first game, a 1-0 Caldwell victory. The Cougars then fell in the second game, 2-1, to drop to 13-9 on the season.

New Haven's best chance to score in Game 1 came in the top of the first, when they loaded the bases on three singles. But with two out, Pulido induced a groundout to end the inning and the threat. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the third. With one out, senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) walked, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston). Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) followed with a single that plated Bodrog for a 1-0 lead. Pulido made the run stand, allowing just two hits the rest of the way for her fifth shutout of the season. For the game, she gave up six hits while striking out two and walking none to improve to 7-2. New Haven's Breanne Gleason (4-6) also went the distance, allowing five hits and two walks while fanning seven.

In the second game, Meg Brown's solo home run in the top of the first put the Chargers on top early. They added a run in the third on a run-scoring double by Nicole Downs for a 2-0 lead. Caldwell didn't get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth, when senior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Capardi from third. With the bases still loaded and two out, Brown recorded a strikeout to end the inning and preserve the lead. Caldwell threatened again in the seventh, with Bodrog reaching on a single and advancing to third with two out. With the tying run 60 feet away, Brown again fanned the final batter to end the game. Brown had nine strikeouts and six walks while giving up just three hits to improve to 4-4.

Junior Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) started and gave up five hits and two runs while fanning nine in five innings. Junior Cecilia Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) pitched two perfect innings in relief.

The Cougars play another non-conference doubleheader at Adelphi University on Tuesday, Apr. 8, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
