CC 8, USP 3
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team won a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games against the University of the Sciences, 4-0 and 8-3 in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. Junior infielder Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) doubled, tripled and homered in the second game as the Cougars improved to 12-8 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The Devils dropped to 6-14 on the season, including a 4-6 mark in the CACC.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, when freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) led off with a single and later scored on an infield single from senior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) for a 1-0 lead. Then in the fifth, sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) tripled, scoring sophomore Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) from second. Genovese then came home on Capardi's sacrifice fly to put Caldwell ahead 3-0. Flasphaler plated fellow senior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) in the bottom of the sixth for the game's final run.

Freshman Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) limited the Devils to just three hits while striking out eight and walking none for her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. Forte and Flasphaler each had a pair of hits for Caldwell. USP pitcher Rachel Morgan went the distance, allowing seven hits and four runs in six innings.

Caldwell took control of Game 2 early, scoring five runs in the first inning. Capardi tripled home Genovese, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley). Speno hit a two-run double, scoring later on a single by freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford) for a 5-0 advantage. In the second inning, Capardi hit a solo home run, her second of the season, to left field for a 6-0 lead. The Devils pushed two runs across on Mia Crotti's double to cut the deficit to 6-2. Run-scoring singles by sophomore Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) in the fourth and Genovese in the fifth, sandwiched around an RBI single by Crotti in the top of the fifth, made the score 8-3 in favor of Caldwell. Capardi had an opportunity to hit for the cycle in the fifth, but she lined out to left field.

Caldwell starter Cecilia Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) gave up six hits and three runs, one earned, in five innings to improve to 2-2. Forte tossed two perfect innings of relief. Erin Degnan took the loss for USP.

Next up for the Cougars is a non-conference doubleheader with the University of New Haven on Sunday, Apr. 6. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
