CALDWELL TABBED FOR FIRST IN CACC SOFTBALL PRESEASON POLL
2-13-09
CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team received the top spot in the
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Preseason Poll, as voted on
by the league's 13 head coaches. The Cougars, who have won four of the past
five CACC Tournament titles and are ranked 24th nationally, received eight
first-place votes and 163 points, three more than runner-up Georgian Court
University.
Last season Caldwell went 35-22 overall, won the CACC Tournament and
advanced to the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament for the fourth
time in five years. The Cougars, coached by Dean Johnson, return 11
players from that squad, including All-American second baseman Gina Capardi
(West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell). The 2008 CACC Player of the Year, Capardi
batted .422 with 79 hits, seven home runs and 51 runs batted in. Other first
team all-CACC performers who return include juniors Danielle
Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston), pictured, and Kyrie Timbrook (Los
Gatos, CA/Los Gatos), and sophomore Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms
River North). Sophomore pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff),
who made the all-CACC second team, was the Cougars' top pitcher a year ago,
turning in a record of 18-8 with an earned-run average of 2.10. Pitcher
Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson), an all-CACC first team
performer in 2007, and infielder Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San
Gorgonio) are the team's other seniors.
The Cougars will begin the 2009 season with 10 games at the Rebel Spring
Games, beginning Mar. 14. The first CACC doubleheader is Mar. 22 against Wilmington
University at Caldwell Field.
