CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team lost to Bloomfield College, 3-1 in
the first game of a scheduled Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The second game was
postponed due to rain and will be made up on Sunday, Apr. 26. The defeat
drops the Cougars to 21-11-2 overall and 12-2 in conference play, while the
Lady Deacons improve to 21-7, 10-1 CACC.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when
Bloomfield recorded two infield hits to put runners at first and third. With
two out, Amanda Bartels hit a three-run home run over the left field fence
for a 3-0 lead. Caldwell answered in the bottom of the sixth with a solo
home run by junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) to
make the score 3-1. Back-to-back singles by freshmen Marisa Tamez
(Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) and Katie Margiotta (Sewell,
NJ/Washington Twp.) helped Caldwell put runners on second and third with
nobody out in the bottom of the seventh. But Jackie Dean fanned the next two
Cougars and induced a groundout to end the threat and the game.
Genovese, pictured, went 3-for-3 to lead the Cougars at the plate. Sophomore
pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) went the distance and
gave up eight hits and three runs while striking out six and walking one to
fall to 9-3. The walk in the sixth inning ended Pulido's string of 34 2/3
innings without walking a batter. Bloomfield's Brianne Moore pitched six
innings and allowed nine hits and one run to earn the win. Dean retired the
three batters she faced for the save.
The Cougars host Felician College in a CACC doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr.
15, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
