CALDWELL SOFTBALL RECEIVES BID TO NCAA EAST REGION TOURNEY

5-5-09
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team will make its fifth appearance in the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament in the last six years, as the Cougars received an at-large bid to the regional on Monday. Caldwell (35-16-2) was a finalist at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament this past weekend. The Cougars will travel to Syracuse, N.Y., and play Dowling College on Friday, May 8 at 3:00 p.m. in the first round.

Caldwell received the No. 4 seed in the East Region Tournament, which will have two sites. The game between Caldwell and No. 5 Dowling will follow the day's first game featuring top-seeded and host Le Moyne College and eighth-seeded Dominican College. Second-seeded C.W. Post is the other host, and will face No. 7 New Haven, while No. 3 Georgian Court takes on No. 6 Southern Connecticut State in Brookville, N.Y. The winners at each site will meet in a best-of-three series beginning May 15 to determine the East Region champion. All eight region champions advance to the NCAA Division II Women's College World Series, held at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va., May 21-25.

Caldwell was looking for its fifth CACC Tournament title in six years last weekend, but fell short, losing to Georgian Court in the championship game, 2-0. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) pitched two shutouts on Thursday and did not allow a run in five innings in a 7-0 victory over Bloomfield in Saturday's elimination game to earn a spot on the all-Tournament team. Juniors Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) joined Pulido on the all-Tournament team.

The Cougars played Dowling in a single game at the Georgian Court Tournament earlier this season, losing 9-4. Caldwell opened the season with a 4-0 loss in eight innings to Le Moyne, and also split a two-game series with Dominican. Overall, the Cougars went 3-8 versus the entire East Region field this past season.
