CALDWELL SOFTBALL LOSES ONE, TIES ANOTHER AT NYIT

4-2-09
NYIT 4, CC 1
NYIT 2, CC 2
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team played a doubleheader at N.Y.I.T. on Thursday, losing the first 4-1 before the second game was called due to darkness with the score tied, 2-2 after seven innings. The results give the Cougars an overall record of 12-8-1, while the Bears improve to 22-13-1. The loss ends Caldwell's nine-game winning streak.

Caldwell scored the first run of Game 1 in the top of the second, when freshman Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home freshman Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.). The Bears tied the game with a run-scoring single by Ashley Gosk in the bottom of the fourth. Then in the fifth, N.Y.I.T. pushed three runs across on three hits and an error for a 4-1 lead. The Cougars, who left 14 runners on base in the game, had four at-bats with the bases loaded and one with runners at second and third, but produced only one run on Ryan's walk.

Sophomore pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) suffered her first loss of the season after giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings to drop to 4-1. Michelle Rapp went the distance for the Bears and allowed seven hits while walking six.

In Game 2, Caldwell answered a Bears' run in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on a double by senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) in the top of the fifth. The lead was short-lived, as an RBI double by Lisa Boystak tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams put runners in scoring position in each of the final two innings, but were unable to score before the end of the seventh. The umpires ruled that there was not sufficient daylight to continue and the game ended in a tie.

Freshman Samantha Mayer (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) had two hits and a run to lead the Cougar bats. Freshman pitcher Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) started and gave up seven hits and two runs while walking three and striking out five in 4 1/3 innings. Nina Cesare pitched all seven innings for the Bears.

Caldwell returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 4 at the Georgian Court Tournament in Lakewood, N.J. The Cougars play Bridgeport at 9:00 a.m. and Molloy at 11:00 a.m.
