CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball
team won a pair of games against Pace University, 4-1 and 9-0, in a
non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The wins
give the Cougars a 16-9-2 record on the season, while the Setters fall to
11-12.
Back-to-back doubles by senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell,
NJ/Caldwell) and junior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos)
allowed the Cougars to score two runs in the bottom of the first inning of
Game 1. A double by junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston,
NJ/Livingston) in the fifth plated freshman Katie Margiotta
(Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), then junior Brittni Frantellizzi
(Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) singled home freshman Korin Ditulli
(Hyde Park, NY/FDR) in the sixth for a 4-0 lead. Pace's Patricia Hurley, who
had four hits in the game, singled in a run in the seventh for the Setters'
only run.
Sophomore Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff), right, pitched a complete game
and allowed one run on 10 hits while fanning eight to match her career high.
In the second game, the Cougars scored a pair of unearned runs in the second
inning to lead 2-0. Then in the fourth, Caldwell sent 11 batters to the
plate and scored seven runs on six hits to break the game open. Sophomore
Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) led off the inning with a
double, then hit a two-run triple in her second at-bat in the inning.
Freshmen Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) and
Samantha Mayer (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) both had run-scoring doubles, while
Capardi hit a two-run double. Timbrook also had a sacrifice fly that brought
home Genovese.
Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn McFarlane (Secaucus, NJ/Immaculate
Conception) tossed a five-inning shutout, blanking the Setters on four hits
while striking out three and walking none. Freshman Kelly Ryan
(Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) had a team-best four hits in the two
wins combined while scoring two runs on the day.
The Cougars take on Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 8, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in
Waterbury, Conn.
