CALDWELL SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT REBEL GAMES

Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team followed up a 9-8 loss to
Southwest Minnesota State with a 5-1 victory over the University of
Minnesota-Duluth on the second day of the Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola
County Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. The results give the Cougars a 1-3
record on the season.
Against Southwest Minnesota State, Caldwell allowed three runs in the first inning before mounting a comeback in the top of the fourth. The Cougars sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the inning to take a five-run lead. Sophomore Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), pictured, hit a pair of two-run doubles, while freshmen Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) and Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) also drove in runs.
The Mustangs pecked away at the lead, scoring a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to make it 8-6 heading into the seventh inning. Meaghan Laetsch hit a two-run double to tie the game at 8-8, then later scored from third on a throwing error to clinch the win. Senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Cougars.
In the day’s
second game, the Cougars scored a pair of runs in both the second and third
innings to take a 4-0 lead over UMD. Tamez had an RBI in each inning, while
Genovese and freshman Samantha Mayer (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) also drove
in runs. After the Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the fourth, a double
by freshman Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) brought home
freshman Korin Ditulli (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) to make the score 5-1.
Freshman Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) allowed one run on
five hits in a complete-game victory, her first as a collegian.
The Cougars continue play at the Rebel Games on Monday, Mar. 16, facing
UMass-Lowell at 1:00 p.m. before taking on Minnesota State-Moorhead at 5:00
p.m.
